Abstract

The harem and selamlik parts, which were seen in Istanbul mansions and accepted as a form of privacy relating to gender patterns, have been analyzed on the basis of the novel “One Face of Istanbul” written by Refik Halid Karay in 1920. Considering the changes of traditional Turkish houses and Turkish society, the limitations created within the frame of privacy have caused to spatial differentiation. It is possible to read the traces of what the existing separation relating to the places in question means, how it is used by the individuals living in the spaces, and how it transforms based on social developments from the novel “One Face of Istanbul.” The novel in hand not only narrates the public and social life within a certain story arc, but also deals with the mansion life at the same time. From this point forth, along with the spatial organizations relating to the harem-selamlik partsof Fikri Pasha Mansion, the spaces in question have been investigated by taking the forms of utilization of these places into consideration.
