Abstract

Today, the existence and meaning of urban squares are indispensable for the cities in terms of sustainability. Urban square had a wide range of meaning in Turkish cities, containing socio-cultural, economic and morphological dimensions come from its history. The aim of this paper is to consider the opportunities and challenges of urban squares based on a sustainable perspective. This consideration will be done in the case of Uskudar Square. The method is based on finding out the codes belong to urban sustainability and the roles and meanings of the squares. The results show that the square has followed an unsustainable character up to now although it has still important opportunities. Designing the squares according to pedestrian scale, strengthening urban memory, the perception of the place and place-attachment, continuity of historical and ecological footprints, integrity of society and space and increasing functional diversity can be some of the critical approaches for the vitality and sustainability of these spaces.
