Abstract

This study was carried out to create a supportive model for the development of original projects by using biodesign in interior architecture undergraduate education. Biodesign is an applied science that is used as an effective method of solving design problems with the help of biology. Inspired by nature and living things has always been a continuing phenomenon for a design process to develop and create a design. As in many design disciplines, in interior architecture and interior design projects, it is a common observation to see design projects inspired by biology. It has been observed that similar methods, inspired by biology, are used by interior architecture undergraduate students in their projects. However, the effect of biology-inspired methods and methods on designs during the project development process is discussed in terms of the originality the project. The inspiration method generally is defined as imitating either the function or the form of nature. This method by itself is not enough to describe the bio-inspiration. Biodesign is an applied science used as an effective method in solving design problems with the help of biology.

In addition to this, to create original and unique design projects, the effects of bio-inspired methodologies and the use of bio[1]inspiration in the design process needs to be discussed. The effects and the methods of usage of biology and technology in the design process became an important subject. Hence the importance of developing research and designing with multiple disciplines for interior architecture is increasing. For this reason, the integration of the design process of interior architecture with biological analysis and observations with support of developing technologies to improve “biodesign” methods.

For this research, the methods of biodesign in interior architecture were explored and searched to develop a proper method that could be used especially in interior architecture undergraduate education. Biodesign is a proper methodology in order to create unique designs. To develop a method, the study constitutes experimental research to develop a supportive model in the development of original projects by using biodesign methodology in interior architecture undergraduate education. To prove the hypothesis, it was preferred to use cross-sectional and orientation/observation research methods, which are among the quantitative research methods.

To form a basis for the development of a potential education model in interior architecture undergraduate education, a program was applied for the studio project course for undergraduate interior architecture, and an experimental study was conducted with the sample group within the scope of this program. For the research, a mixed group of interior architecture students from the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Özyeğin University was composed. For the analysis of the study, the differences such as gender, age, family education status, religion, language, race, nationality, and financial opportunities of the students were excluded.

With this experimental study, it is desired to develop a method that will support the development of unique projects in interior architecture undergraduate education. The data obtained from the study were analyzed and evaluated in terms of the feasibility of biodesign as an appropriate method to be used in interior architecture undergraduate education. In addition, this study aimed to create a source for various research on biodesign usage areas and methodologies in interior architecture, and the contribution to the application model of biodesign proposed within the scope of the study to the development of unique projects in interior architecture undergraduate education has been evaluated.

The introduction part states the importance, the purpose, the scope, and the methodology of the research with the supportive data obtained from the literature research carried out within the scope of the subject.

In the second part, the definition of biodesign is included through the literature research with the analysis of the practiced areas in the 21st century and the methods of use in interior architecture determined.

In the third part of the report, the suggested biodesign method for undergraduate interior architecture design education is explained. The experimental study process with the sample group of the program was planned according to this program proposal explained. The analysis of the data obtained from the experimental study was reported, and the experimental study was evaluated in terms of a suitable program for interior architecture undergraduate education.

In the conclusion part of the research, the data analysis, and the evaluation of the suggested biodesign program for interior architecture undergraduate education have adhered. Further, to guide the studies within the scope of the subject, more suggestions are stated to develop for future studies.
