Abstract

Electronic book (e-book) is an information technology product which can be defined as an interface that transfers the content of a print book via a screen. E-books can be read through tablet computers, laptop computers, smartphones, e-book readers, etc. E-book reading experience is different from the traditional print book in many ways. The aim of this literature review is to analyze related researches in the current literature and compare thematically in order to improve the reading experience. ‘e-book’, ‘electronic book’, ‘digital book’, ‘e-reading’, ‘reading experience’ keywords were searched in Science Direct Database and articles related to interface design and product design were analyzed within the scope of the study. Accessed researches’ content were analyzed and compared in five mean themes; e-book perception and awareness, reading experience, acceptance of technological products, usage intentions, ergonomics and usability. The investigated studies are presented in tabular form. With literature review, it has been seen that the researches that investigate the e-book reading experience, the properties of e-books which are similar to traditional print book reading (touch gestures, note taking, changing the page, leaving bookmark ect.) and distinct characteristics (character font and size, page background color, etc.) are limited. Also literature review showed that researches about leisure time e-book reading experience and e-book reading experience of different age groups are very limited.
