Abstract

Patient capacities, regular increase in cancer incidence, area covered by oncology in hospitals and developing cancer treatments are causing a change in architectural design processes of both health care structures including oncology and oncology centers. Hospital configuration and oncology units design is changing and user perceptions of accessibility and space satisfaction are affected. Oncology units need to be well structured in terms of spatial for cancer patient with different age/gender/ disease/stage. This descriptive/cross-sectional study was undertaken to investigate oncology unit interior standards and determine influence level of patients with interior components affecting the quality of life/treatment. On 1000 volunteer cancer patients in two oncology units were questioned space experience with interior satisfaction and subjective-objective data about interior components with accessibility were collected. Design Quality Indicator approach, new evaluation criterions to determine and improve post-use evaluation for healthcare buildings, has been used. The case study was shaped on basis of a questionnaire survey of patients’ indoor experiences. It has been determined that demographic data related to cancer affect patients’ access and indoor satisfaction. It is thought that improving space satisfaction and quality will increase quality of life. While designing oncology units, it is foresaw that quality of health services with user evaluations will contribute to increase of space quality and interior design process.
