Karaköy-Kemeraltı Bölgesinde 19. Yüzyıldan Günümüze Yaşanan Kentsel ve Toplumsal Gelişim, Dönüşüm ve Koruma Sorunları

Abstract

In this study, physical and functional conversion from 19th century to present of Karaköy-Kemeraltı district is examined. The study reveals that in recent years retail shops left their place to art galleries, luxury cafés, restaurants and hotels. The role of Galataport project is certainly determinant on this situation. In case this transformation is proceeded rapidly and in an uncontrolled way, serious conservation problems will likely occur in the urban conservation area which is rich in historical buildings. In the study which is based on these foreseen problems, physical conversion of the avenues, streets, wards, parcels, and functional and physical conversion of the buildings were examined. Besides this, by documenting the present condition of the area, materials, construction techniques and functions of the buildings were analyzed along with their registration status. The obtained data were evaluated in the light of Valletta Principles which is as a guide for conserving historical areas.
