In this article, it is aimed to identify the general approaches and tendencies in the field of monumental building heritage conservation in Turkey in the last 90 years since the foundation of Turkish Republic in 1923. It is intended that this article will make a contribution to the studies on the history of architectural conservation in Turkey by focusing monumental buildings in İstanbul. In order to evaluate conservation and the restoration processes of the monumental buildings in İstanbul, four buildings/building complexes which are dominant on the skyline of the city have been chosen as the case study of this research. Accordingly, the conservation approaches for the Hagia Sophia Museum, Fatih Mosque, Topkapi Palace Complex and Dolmabahçe Palace Ceremony Hall are briefly represented and studied. Guided by the conservation methods preferred at these restorations, the periodical tendencies which are possible to exist in conservation field. The results of the article aim to set forth the existing problems and the controversiries of monumental building conservation in Turkey.
