Abstract

In the 21st century, the building sector, like technology, medicine and politics, is in a state of constant development and change. Due to this development and change, it is not enough to satisfy only the functional requirements of today’s space designs. Day by day, it is becoming more important to establish connection between the space designs and the users, and to ensure that the spaces have original, creative and aesthetic values. At this point, it is a major factor for the designers to reach to the essence of the connection between the user and the space and to gain the ability of abstract thinking. The design process starts with the first thought about the solution of the problem that occurs in the mind of the person. It is common for students who are not accustomed to abstract thinking in their pre-university education to think that the space consists only of elements such as walls, roofs, doors and windows, without being able to interpret this raw thought sufficiently. On the other hand, for the formation of the space, it is not obligatory that these elements exist and to draw the boundaries clearly. Any area that meet the requirements can form a space. Abstraction is a method used to fully comprehend the interrelations of ideas that shape the space designs. In this context, it is an important issue that needs to be emphasized in the process of space design education. In this study, the concept of abstraction will be examined through 20th century abstract art which has similar characteristics with architecture, and also the architectural understanding and buildings of architect Frank Lloyd Wright who has brought significant buildings to 20th century architecture.
