Abstract

The concentration of the population living in the world in the cities creates spatial and socio-economic pressure in the city and this pressure negatively affects the city’s sustainable living standards. For this study, it was seen as the main problem that the urban public transportation systems were not planned in parallel with the population growth and that the uncontrolled spatial growth in the city affected. The ‘Transit[1]oriented Development (TOD)’, which covers both sustainable urban development and sustainable transportation phenomena and provides its integration, was chosen as the appropriate theory for the resolution of urban disruptions in question. In studies carried out in the world, the TOD approach is generally applied within the scope of planning policies in the new development regions of the city. This study creates originality by examining the Marmaray Line, which is already an urbanized region. Considering that the effective area is more due to the long line length, the stations on the Anatolian Side is concentrated. The suitability of the TOD application is measured to ensure that the line environment is a preferred line, especially for urban trips. As a method, Cervero’s 5D (density, diversity, design, destination accessibility, distance to transit) approach is based on. In line with this approach, there are four main evaluation categories for the study area. Increased density of built environment, variety of land use, accessibility and pedestrian-oriented urban design, and distance to public transportation systems are determined categories. Twelve parameters were calculated under these headings. The calculated values were then evaluated by the analytical hierarchy process and a different TOD index was calculated for each station. It was observed whether the stations examined according to the index values are suitable for TOD application.
