Abstract

Hyperbolic paraboloid is a type of double curvature surface. The use of this surface type as a structural system became possible with the widespread use of reinforced concrete. This structural form has been used many times in the building industry with the integration of various surfaces with each other. Neutralizing tensile and compressive stresses at every point made it thinner and more aesthetic than other shell structures. On the other hand, the implementations of these structures has been limited to certain regions due to the difficulty of construction such as formwork, reinforcement placement, concrete casting, forming insulation and coating layers. However, with the advancing construction technology and the invention of new materials, it has led to the emergence of various contemporary technics. In this study, a theoretical information for reinforced concrete is given and mentioned thin shell structures. Then the important concrete shell designers of the 20th century and their structures that marked their period, the hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar), which is one of the most ambitious forms among shell structures has been examined in the context of historical development and construction techniques. Reinforced concrete hypar shell applications, which are classified under the titles of pioneers, development / peak and contemporary applications, are summarized in a table containing distinctive features such as construction problems, construction technique and ease, span, structure material and shell thickness. It is thought that the study will contribute to the lack of Turkish resources in this field, especially for the students of architecture and engineering.
