Abstract

The theories developed regarding the architectural design process examine the multidimensionality of the design in different ways although some principles remain the same. One of these studies acknowledges that every architectural object consist of a mimesis potential and information regarding those objects that will be designed afterwards. Additionally, it admits that these objects are actually no more than the mimesis of its predecessors. From this point of view, the purpose of this study is to discuss the concept of mimesis in the process of architectural design through an analytic relationship parallel to the conceptual depth. Rough sets, which are considered one of the research fields of mathematics but have a wide range of research fields from the social sciences to the medical and engineering sciences, have a systematic work system explaining the phenomenon of mimesis in the design process. This systematic based on the analysis of opposition is compatible with mimesis, which explains its raison d’erte via the ones that already exist. Consequently, it is accepted as a strong basis for its analysis, which defines the relation between the imitator and the one being imitated. In the text grounded on three layers in relation with each other, primarily using this point of view, the theoretical framework of this study was established on the basis of the design process, mimesis, and rough sets. After that, an analysis proposition to support the theoretical foundations based on the basic concepts of rough sets was developed. Finally, the proposed analysis relationship in the Archiprix projects was tested. It is certain that it does not seem possible to indicate the design process as a mental experience in a complete and clear way. However, it is accepted that studies that try to elucidate the meaning of the design process, as in the present study, will create a rich content supporting education methods in the architectural design studio.
